of the previous location. The Road Bridge can then be built to
a much lower level carrying the Road Way on rolled beams and by
slightly modifying the alignment of the Road this bridge can
also be placed in the solid and thus provide a cheaper substitu-
-te for Mr. Eves' design.

Bridge No. 4. All the wells have now bean sunk to
depths from 35 to 40 feet and have gone down for about twelve
feet into the decomposed granite. This is water logged and is
really no better than course sand, the Kaolin in it gets
separated and disolved in sinking and the wells have given a
good deal of trouble. This has been partly due to their not
having been started all together or in batches. No. 8 is out
of the vertical. The ground all around has sunk and is broken
up badly and although the founds will carry the weight I do not
propose to trust to that alone but to safeguard from any lateral
movement of the soil that may take place, by piling with hard
wood piles set at a rake all round and to platform to them in
order that the piles themselves ray take weight if required.
This will obviate the putting in of the struts shown in your
plan but it will necessitate putting the platform on too high a
level for the columns shown in your design so that I propose
building piers with the stones taken from the abandoned bridge
which are now lying at site and keeping the colurns for the
use elsewhere. The piers will I think give a better distribution
of weight on the skew span and will not be higher than sixteen
feet.

Bridge No. 6. The crack in the wing wall has not
gone further since September. The abutments and wings of this
bridge are of lime concrete with plums and have a skin of
masonry in cement on the outside or road side only. At the
back the concrete was shuttered in the same way as for cement
concrete. The lime concrete consists of a fat lime mixed with
red earth which is unburned. The concrete sets moderately under
these conditions but cannot stand water and soon rots. The
girders
